Processing photos in Adobe Lightroom
Hello! My name is Marat Safin, I am engaged in photography for 4 years. Today we will analyze the processing of this photo.
This picture was taken by my beloved wife on the shooting in Ufa on the Nikon D600, the lens — Nikon 35mm f / 1.4 G.
What would I like to improve on processing? In the photo, a good black and white drawing, which I would like to emphasize, first of all highlight the girl, her face, without increasing the skin problems so as not to resort to «retouching». I would like to bring all the colors together to a single one, so that the photo looks holistic and does not bother with extra colors. And the main thing is not to «go too far» with processing, we do not need a «toxic, dirty» result; The treatment should only emphasize the important in the photograph.
As an editor, let’s turn to Adobe Lightroom, as the desired result can be easily achieved in this program without using complex processing algorithms in other editors. So, the first actions will be brightness changes, and after that we will start to color ones. In their pictures
I often resort to Curves. Let’s compare the work of «Curve» and, for example, the slider «Whites» («White Point», whose shift has the maximum impact on the light areas of the image and can raise the contrast of the picture, since in our photo the main objects are just located in the «Light»).
Set the value Highlights «-100» and Blacks «+25» (For the Whites slider and «Curve» to work better «read»). Compare the two options:
Slider Whites +50
«Sharp Curve» in «Light»
As we see, the results are not much different from each other, that is, in the Whites slider «a special form of» Curve «, similar to the one I built in the» Point Curve «panel, working on the light areas of the image in the first place , correction can be made
or in the Basic panel, or in the Point Curve panel (Tone Curve), as you like.
The main part of changing the brightness, from the habit, I make in the panel «Curve». So, in the Basic panel I make changes:
«Linearly» raised the brightness with the help of Exposure. Raised the shadow areas in brightness and «killed» the contrast in them, since they are not important in this photo.
And in the «Puncture Curve» panel I make the following changes:
In the areas of the glare itself I did not build the «Sharp» form of the «Curve», since if we raise the contrast in these areas, then the details, texture, etc., will «float», but in this portrait of the girl it is is not necessary; the girl in the photo, I’m sure, would not like to see irregularities, bright transitions, skin problems on her face, she would like to see the face smooth and pleasant, so to raise the contrast on the glare itself in this case to nothing.
Also, along with these changes, I apply a lightening «Brush» on my face (Image 006) with changes in Highlights, this will allow me to take a «Brush» of a large size and roughly draw on the face, since Highlights has maximum impact on the light areas of the image, that is getting to the dark parts of the background, the effect «does not leave».
We get a contrast image on important areas of photography, namely the illuminated areas of the girl’s face.
Now work with color. In the Camera Calibration panel, we can have a wide impact on the color, masking problems will manifest to a lesser degree than, for example, in the HSL panel. Therefore, I do the basic color correction in this way:
I remove cold shades from the background, «yellowness» from the background, draw the colors in the photo
And I finish color changes in HSL, because there are the biggest problems of masking, I will shift the sliders with not high «steps»:
At this end the treatment. I get the result.
From this photo session I myself have a picture in the portfolio.
But this image I processed in Adobe Photoshop. Why?
First, from what we used today, I do not like the Camera Calibration panel, because the color changes affect the brightness changes, in «FS» you can use «Blending Modes» and separate the brightness and color corrections.
Secondly, in FS there are correlations, with a choice of color ranges already and wider than HSL, there are more opportunities to redirect the «Color» locally and locally.
Thirdly, we did not resort to sharpening in Lightroom, because this stage should definitely be left for FSH, since we are going to publish photos in the Internet in a small amount. And, finally, to adjust the brightness and color in the «FSH» you can, using already ready different masks, in Lightroom masking we can only draw with Brush.
However, I will not say that the results are colossally different from each other, but some will notice the difference in the result and in processing. Where then to process the pictures? The answer will be ambiguous, everyone works in his own way. Everything depends on taste, habit, professional level, own requirements to the quality of photography, customer requirements, purpose and audience, which will view the pictures.
I wish all creative successes. Thank you all for your attention. Until next time!
